Foods that Breastfeeding Moms Should Avoid

New mothers are confused about their diet. They do not know what foods they should stay away from, especially during the period of breastfeeding. Some foods might cause fussiness in new mothers or even result in negative effects on the infants. New mothers should know that it takes around two hours to the food consumed for breast milk conversion. When a baby becomes irritated or gassy post breastfeeding, then the reason might be the food consumed. New mothers should keep a journal of their diet to track the behavioral changes in their infants. These are some of the foods that new mothers should completely avoid during the period of breastfeeding:

1. Foods That Result in Gas

Certain items like chocolate, strawberries, kiwi, citrus fruits, onion, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, peppers, broccoli, chili pepper, curry and cinnamon might result in gas or irritability in babies. Experts suggest that such foods should be consumed in moderation.

2. Alcohol

Alcohol should be avoided completely. There is no recommended level of alcohol for breastfeeding mothers. Mothers who accidentally consume alcohol should avoid breastfeeding completely till the consumed alcohol gets cleared out of the breast milk. It takes around three hours for this process, depending upon the amount of alcohol consumed. Consumption of alcohol reduces the quantity of milk that a new mother releases. It might even change the smell or even taste of their milk. Many time infants do not drink such milk, which ultimately impairs their health.

3. Caffeine

Irrespective of the fondness for caffeine, it is necessary to limit its consumption. More than three cups i.e. 24 ounces of caffeinated liquids per day can be harmful for the infants. Drinking high levels of caffeine results in agitated babies or even hinder their sleep.

4. Fish

Without any doubt, fish or any seafood is a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids as well as protein. However, most of the seafood has high levels of mercury. Consumption of the same through breastfeeding might hinder the development of nervous system in infants. It is possible to make a wise choice of seafood to avoid more than recommended levels of mercury.

5. Allergens

Many parents are allergic to some foods. It might happen that they pass on the same allergies to their kids. Even if one of the parents is allergic to certain food, the risk of same allergies increases in kids. It is better to avoid foods that might result in allergies in kids. New mothers should avoid dairy products, shellfish, tree nuts, egg whites, peanuts, wheat or even soy if they are aware about allergies in advance.

6. Harmful Foods

At times, new mothers are aware about the results of consuming certain foods. They should not risk the health of their infants by taking a chance of consuming them. Many foods should be consumed in limited quantities to prevent the possibilities of negative effects on their infants. Some foods might result in permanent damage due to weak system of the infants. It might result in low weight of infants. At times, it might impair their motor functions or even their mental development.
